Major Fallacies Surrounding Stone Artifacts and Assemblages
While lithic objects can potentially inform us about past adaptations and behaviors, it is important to develop a comprehensive understanding of all of the various processes that influence what we recover from the archaeological record. We argue here that many assumptions used by archaeologists to derive behavioral inferences through the definition, conceptualization, and interpretation of both...
متن کاملHominid species and stone-tool assemblages: how
A fast-growing quantity of fossil material post-cranial as well a s skulls and teeth is combining with cladistics and other new theoretical perspectives radically to change the picture of human evolution. Here, a summary of that picture is given, as the basis for a re-examination of that fundamental question of Pleistocene archaeology, the matching with the bones of the stones of the palaeolith...
متن کاملPoster: An Application for Analyzing Stone Tool Artifacts
This poster describes an application under development that supports quantitative analysis of 3D models of stone tools. The models are created from original artifacts by using a laser scanner. The application currently supports interactive labeling of flake scars on flint cores. We discuss our ideas for automatic labeling and future enhancements to the application.
متن کاملMetagenomic analysis of bacterial and archaeal assemblages in the soil-mousse surrounding a geothermal spring
The soil-mousse surrounding a geothermal spring was analyzed for bacterial and archaeal diversity using 16S rRNA gene amplicon metagenomic sequencing which revealed the presence of 18 bacterial phyla distributed across 109 families and 219 genera. Firmicutes, Actinobacteria, and the Deinococcus-Thermus group were the predominant bacterial assemblages with Crenarchaeota and Thaumarchaeota as the...
متن کاملLike a rolling stone: the mobility of maerl (Corallinaceae) and the neutrality of the associated assemblages.
Beds of nonattached coralline algae (maerl or rhodoliths) are widespread and considered relatively species rich. This habitat is generally found in areas where there is chronic physical disturbance such that maerl thalli are frequently moved. Little is known, however, about how natural disturbance regimes affect the species associated with maerl. This study compared the richness, animal abundan...
